What is an overactive bladder?
Overactive Bladder (OAB) is a common condition that causes spontaneous bladder spasms and contractions, resulting in the frequent, sudden need to urinate. Often, these urges are so strong that there's not enough time to get to the bathroom.
OAB is often associated with a kind of bladder leakage called "urge incontinence," which includes moderate and frequent bladder leakage.
Common Causes:
- Hormonal changes in women
- Urinary tract infection
- Cancer
- Bladder stimulants and irritants such as alcohol, caffeine, carbonated drinks
- Medications such as sedatives, cold medicines, and high blood pressure medicines
- Nerve dysfunction associated with trauma, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, Alzheimer’s, Parkinsonism, etc.
